The Asus AX86U is the right router for power users

The Asus RT-AX86U is one of the most-recommended Wi-Fi 6 routers for technical users who want capabilities beyond what consumer-grade routers offer. The combination of strong Wi-Fi 6 performance, broad VPN support, third-party firmware compatibility, and AiMesh networking makes it a pragmatic centerpiece for a serious home network.

I have used one as my primary home router for the past two years. This is the long version of why it remains the right answer for self-hosting households.

What the AX86U is

The Asus RT-AX86U is a Wi-Fi 6 (AX5700) router released in 2020 and continuously updated since. The current “Pro” variant adds 2.5 GbE LAN ports and slightly better Wi-Fi performance. The standard variant has a single 2.5 GbE WAN/LAN port and gigabit elsewhere.

The Pro version is worth the upgrade for the additional 2.5 GbE ports if you have a 2.5 GbE switch or NAS.

What the AX86U does well

The Wi-Fi 6 performance is genuinely strong. Real-world throughput in our testing on a 1 Gbps internet connection: typically 800 to 950 Mbps to a single Wi-Fi 6 client device 15 feet away with no walls between. This is at the top of what consumer routers deliver.

The built-in VPN client supports OpenVPN and WireGuard. You can configure a VPN provider’s connection at the router level, and any device connecting to the router automatically routes through the VPN. Per-device VPN policies (some devices through VPN, others bypass) are configurable.

The AiMesh feature lets the AX86U be the main node in an Asus-branded mesh network. You can add additional Asus routers as nodes, and they all coordinate to provide seamless wifi roaming throughout a larger home.

The AsusWRT operating system is more capable than typical consumer router firmware. Advanced features (port forwarding controls, QoS, DDNS, parental controls, traffic analyzer) are all configurable.

The third-party firmware support is real. Asuswrt-Merlin (a community-maintained fork of AsusWRT with additional features and bug fixes) is well-supported on the AX86U. You get access to features like Skynet IP blocking, DiverseTraffic monitoring, and other community-contributed tools.

The USB ports support storage attachment for basic NAS-style functionality (sharing files over the network), printer attachment, and 4G/5G modem failover.

What the AX86U does less well

The price is at the higher end of consumer routers. $250 to $350 is meaningful money for a router; the budget alternatives (TP-Link AX1800 at around $80) work fine for most users.

The AiMesh ecosystem is Asus-only. If you want to add a non-Asus router as a mesh node, AiMesh does not support it. For users who want mesh flexibility, eero or Orbi systems are more flexible.

The AsusWRT interface, while capable, is dated. The web admin panel feels like 2018 SaaS. The mobile app is functional but not particularly polished.

Software updates from Asus directly come at irregular intervals. Asuswrt-Merlin updates more reliably but requires understanding what you are doing.

The Wi-Fi 6E (6 GHz band) is not supported. For users with Wi-Fi 6E or 7 client devices, this is a missed feature. The AX88U Pro and newer models add 6 GHz; AX86U does not.

The 5 GHz performance, while strong, is not as good as the absolute best routers (TP-Link BE-class Wi-Fi 7 routers, Asus’s own newer flagships). For most households, the AX86U is more than enough; for the most demanding setups, newer models exist.

Why it matters for self-hosters

Several specific things matter:

The router-level VPN means you can route specific devices through your VPN of choice without configuring each device individually. Your Pi-hole running on a Raspberry Pi can bypass the VPN to reach upstream resolvers; your Roku TV can route through the VPN for streaming; your laptop can choose per-app via its own VPN client.

The AsusWRT/Merlin combination supports DNS routing tricks. You can force all DNS queries to go to your local Pi-hole or AdGuard Home regardless of what individual devices try to do, defeating the “smart” devices that hardcode their DNS.

The 2.5 GbE WAN port future-proofs the router for fiber upgrades. Most homes are still on gigabit-or-less internet, but as 2 Gbps and faster connections become available, the AX86U is ready.

The USB 3 NAS functionality is genuinely usable. For households that want a basic network share without buying a Synology, plugging a 4 TB external drive into the router and configuring it as a network share works adequately.

Comparison with alternatives

Versus mesh systems (eero, Orbi, Asus ZenWiFi):

Mesh systems are easier for non-technical users. You buy 2-3 nodes, place them around the house, the mesh handles wifi distribution automatically. Performance per node is lower than the AX86U’s single-router performance, but coverage is better in larger homes.

For an apartment or small house: AX86U single router is better.
For a larger home (>2000 sq ft) with wifi dead spots: mesh system is better.

Versus the cheaper Wi-Fi 6 routers (TP-Link AX1800, Asus RT-AX55):

The cheaper models work fine for casual use. The AX86U’s advantages (better hardware, more flexible firmware, third-party firmware support, 2.5 GbE) matter only if you will use them. For users who will not configure VPNs, will not flash firmware, and just want internet to work: save money on a cheaper router.

Versus enterprise-grade options (Ubiquiti UniFi, MikroTik):

Enterprise routers offer more granular control and better long-term reliability. The setup complexity is higher. The cost is comparable for entry tier, much higher for professional setups.

For users who specifically want the enterprise approach: Ubiquiti UniFi is the answer. For users who want consumer-friendly with power-user options available: AX86U.

Who should buy it

You self-host services and need router-level networking control.

You want Wi-Fi 6 performance for current and near-future devices.

You will use the VPN client, the third-party firmware support, or both.

Your home is a single-router-coverable size (apartment to medium house).

You can spend $250 to $350 on a router.

Who should not buy it

You only need basic internet for streaming and browsing. The TP-Link AX1800 at $80 does this fine.

You have a large home with wifi dead spots. A mesh system works better.

You specifically want Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7. Get a newer model.

You want the absolute simplest setup with no configuration. eero or similar consumer-friendly mesh.

You want enterprise-grade features and are willing to learn enterprise tools. Ubiquiti UniFi.

A specific recommendation

For technical households wanting a capable router with self-hosting-friendly features: Asus RT-AX86U Pro at $350 (worth the upgrade for the extra 2.5 GbE ports).

For non-technical households: TP-Link AX1800 or basic mesh system at one third the cost.

For larger homes: Asus ZenWiFi mesh or eero Pro 6E.

For users who want to learn networking properly: Ubiquiti Dream Router or similar entry to UniFi.
